Black And White by Paul Volponi
Black and White is a story about two best friends named Marcus and Eddie. Marcus and Eddie have been preforming a number of stickups inorder to get money for a school trip but get caught and now have to face difffrent punishments for a crime the both commited together. This puts a major strain on their friendship and Basketball career.
The Book
1. The main characters of this book are Marcus and Eddie. Marcus is black, tough, and comes from a poor family. Eddie is white, nice, and come from a wealthier family than Marcus.
2. In the beginning of this story everything is going fine and Marcus and Eddie are best friends. Towards the middle they start to need money for a school field trip so they begin to rob people on the street for money but when they rob a bus driver and the bus driver winds up getting shot. In the end the bus driver picks out Marcus but not Eddie and Marcus is going to go to jail but Eddie does not.
3. Judging by Marcus and Eddie’s experiences I think the author is trying to say that life isn’t always fair and sometimes you need to work extra hard to keep your friends.
The Issues
1. Marcus going to jail effects Marcus by first making him angry that Eddie doesn’t have to go to jail and almost ruins their friendship. Marcus going to jail affects Eddie by causing him to be confused and not turning himself in also. Marcus going to jail affects Rose almost in a positive way by making her less afraid to spend time with Marcus because she knows that there won’t be much time left.
2. The robbery makes the books issues real and important by showing how really scared the muggers are too and also how desperate two people can become so quickly. The basketball game riot also makes the books social issues seem real and important by showing how much a town can get involved and how stubborn people can be.
